Treasure Island Foods CEO and President Maria Kamberos announced that all six stores including the one located at 1526 E. 55th Street will be closing on October 12th. According an internal memo sent to employees, Kmberos said,
“As you have recently found out, we made the very difficult decision to wind down operations as a company. We are sorry it has had to come to this point and we know how detrimental this is to each and every one of you and your families. We have done everything we could to attempt to get the company on solid ground to try to operate for another 55 years. Unfortunately, given the current industry conditions, it has been impossible for us to continue to operate without losing money.”
Treasure Island Foods was founded in 1963 by Christ Kamberos, born to Greek immigrants. The store is known for carrying unusual organic produces from around the world. In addition to the Hyde Park location, other Treasure Island stores are located in Streeterville, Lake View, Gold Coast, Old Town and Wilmette.
