The Seminary Co-op Bookstores

An Independent Bookseller in Hyde Park

The Seminary Co-op Bookstores, Inc. is a Chicago Hyde Park independent campus bookstore selling textbooks & other literature. The Co-op was started in 1961 when 17 Chicago Theological Seminary students banded together to order course books at wholesale price. They each invested $10. According to the bookstore, they still have archives, all the founding documents in spiral notebooks. The founders ran the shop out of the basement of the Seminary, where the Co-op was housed for over 50 years. In 2012, they moved. The group of investors (now known as “members”) grew quickly, and the store began offering much more than just textbooks.

An exemplary academic bookstore, The Seminary Co-op Bookstores attracts customers nationally and internationally. Its inventory reflects the literary and scholarly interests of its membership, many of them affiliated currently or previously with its neighbor and landlord, the University of Chicago
